Second grade is a year of self-awareness, community awareness, and growth. Students learn about the importance of belonging to something larger than family; their school and community. They learn, as members of a school, how to become a problem solver. Through the study of local community in social studies and local environment in science, they attend field trips to the fire station, a market, and the library.

Students are introduced to physical, life and earth sciences while performing experiments and studying about motion, life cycles, weathering of soil, and rocks and minerals.  Reading becomes less puzzle-like and more comprehension based. In math, money, time, graphing, and measurement are critical concepts that help lay the foundation for future mathematical learning.
